Langford eyes next recreation project

A new sports facility opened in Langford Saturday. It includes a new ice rink and a bowling alley.

At the grand opening Langford Mayor Stew Young says he wants the new facility to invigorate the region.

“We’re very fortunate to have the Provincial Government and the Federal Government support us with recreation, especially at a time when there wasn’t many jobs three years ago. So, it’s great to open this today and bring back the memories of what it used to be like three years ago with no jobs and now to see a bit of a stabilization of the economy. Opening this up here now is a real positive step for our community.”

Young says the sportsplex came in slightly under budget and the city is already looking at their next recreation project.

“We’re now negotiating with the YMCA and hopefully we’ll be able to announce a new pool being started in January or February of the upcoming year.”

Around 2,000 people used the facility in its first hour of operation Saturday.
