Transit union says service expansion a "step in the right direction"
The union representing transit bus drivers and mechanics has welcomed the increase in service hours approved in this year’s transit budget…but says it doesn’t go far enough.
Local 333 of the Canadian Auto Workers commissioned a poll earlier this year that confirmed there is widespread unhappiness with overcrowded busses, and “pass-ups” of would be passengers.
Union President Ben Williams says from that perspective the additions that the Transit Commission approved yesterday are in the right places…
“The hours that are being put forward will definitely start to improve the pass-up problems that are out there, but, uh, I think there’s a substantial amount of hours that could be added to it”
Williams also agrees with the addition of two thousand hours annually of Handi-Dart service. He says Handi-Dart is severely underfunded.
